WHAT'S IN A NAME
evelyn & gray
So I turned to the women in the family that had come before me ... I was blessed with two beautiful grandmothers who were adorned with gorgeous names and whilst it was hard to choose between them, I rested upon my grandmother on my father’s side who was named ‘Lily Evelyn’ ... what I know and remember of her was a gentle, graceful woman, who was both fearless and resilient in the face of true adversity. She had the warmest of hearts and lived for her only son and grandchildren.... hence Evelyn!
Gray is from my long-time partner Kenny side of the family, (Kenny has always been my loyal sidekick, awaiting the day I turn the key to my own florist). We chose the surname of his grandmother Elizabeth (Betty) Gray - a formidable woman who was a Sargent in the Army Pay Corp during the Second World War, she had strong work ethic, a beautiful heart with a great sense of humour, firm manners and values, she adored her family and raised three children largely on her own in the harsh, beautiful and unforgiving West coast of Scotland.
Evelyn and Gray was born!
I wanted a name that was strong, beautiful and timeless but ultimately personal....
“Choose a job you love, and you will never work a day in your life”
For nearly 30 years I have been doing just that! Ok so it is work and very hard work at times, but I absolutely love it!
The early morning bustle at the flower market is like a secret hive, the streets outside are cold and sleepy, then you walk through the doors to an array of light, sound and colour. The scent that hits you when you first walk in to the studio or shop, a smell that you fully stop and take in as you know you will only capture it once a day.
The continual change of colours and textures as the flowers and foliage flit through their seasons from the adorable anemones, iris and ranunculus that bombard you with their vibrancy in spring, to the heavenly aroma and delicate touch of peonies and garden roses in summer, then a change to the moody depths of woody, dark stems of oak, twisted willows and berries that linger through autumn and winter. Each one an absolute delight!
The chatter of customers as they meander over the plant section. The excitement of getting prepped and organised for Christmas, Valentines and Mother’s Day. The overwhelming feeling you get when your bride sees her bouquet and loves it even more than you knew she would.
The continual gratitude you feel when the response from clients is overwhelming, you know you’ve touched there day somehow whether it’s a get well, good luck, goodbye or celebration. I could go on and on, but I think you get the idea.
I pour all that love, passion, happiness, excellence, experience and attention to detail into creating beautiful, timeless and classical flowers whatever the occasion.
I look forward to welcoming you to Evelyn and Gray and hope you enjoy your shopping experience be it online, over the phone or in the Store.
